Restrictions in Srinagar to prevent Muharram processions

In Karachi over three hundred small and big processions will be taken out from different parts of the city.

Earlier this week, provincial home minister Sohail Anwar Khan Siyal had asked the federal interior ministry to suspend mobile phone services in major cities of the province on 9 and 10 Muharram.

Internet services were partially operational in Karachi and other parts of Sindh.

In order to keep law and order situation under complete control, the government also chose to ban pillion riding in sensitive cities of the country, including Karachi, Quetta and Peshawar, as part of Ashura security arrangements.

The services were suspended in Karachi, Sukkur, Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Khairpur, Shikarpur, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Sialkot, and Bhukkur Quetta, and many other cities on Friday and Saturday and restored late in the night after the Muharram processions culminated.

"We know it will cause inconvenience to the people but the step has been taken to ensure there is no untoward incident during the ninth and tenth day of Muharram and processions", he said. In addition to the deployment of over 23 thousand Police officers, 26 snipers have also been posted at high rise buildings across the procession route.

The authorities Sunday imposed strict restrictions in 13 police stations to foil the 10th Muharram procession of the Shia Muslims. M. A. Jinnah Road has been divided into 23 sub-sectors, whereas all 287 entry points to M. A. Jinnah Road, including the shops on the route have been sealed.

After the outbreak of militancy in Kashmir, authorities have not allowed the procession since 1990.
