Man City confirms Mendy has ruptured knee ligament

A statement from the club read: 'Manchester City can confirm that Benjamin Mendy has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The French player sustained the injury during the first half of City's 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace in their Premier League clash at home.

"After initial tests in Manchester in the beginning of the week, Benjamin Mendy is gone to Barcelona or new examinations confirmed the injury", stated the Blues.

France global Mendy, who joined from Monaco in the close-season, has already become an integral part of City's attacking juggernaut, that has scored 16 goals in the last three league games.

The 23-year-old missed the first two games of the season with a thigh problem before making his debut in the 2-1 win over Bournemouth on August 26.

"Bad news guys", Mendy posted on social media "I will be joining Injury FC on loan for a couple months with ruptured ACL but will be back soon and stronger hopefully".

"Benjamin will undergo surgery tomorrow in Barcelona, because he has a cut in the front cruciate ligament of the right knee, and everyone in the club wants to recover quickly".

City didn't give a likely timeframe for Mendy's absence.

The Frenchman had been on impressive form since he joined City from Monaco for a reported 52 million pounds ($69.97 million) fee in July.

Coach Pep Guardiola had said after Tuesday's Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk that he feared Mendy's injury was more serious than thought.
