The U.S. has threatened on multiple occasions to cut trade with countries that do business with North Korea in violation of United Nations resolutions, and last week, Trump signed an executive order allowing the blacklist any company, firm, or individual caught illegally aiding the North Korean regime.

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho responded to the comments this week, accusing Trump of effectively declaring war and said Pyongyang now had the right to shoot down USA military jets even if they do not cross into his country's airspace.

The Minister added that North Korea will not wait to act even if the bombers are not within its airspace.

Yonhap suggested the reclusive North was in fact bolstering its defenses by moving aircraft to its east coast and taking other measures after US bombers flew close to the Korean Peninsula at the weekend. The U.S. had launched bombers off the east coast of North Korea to give North Korea a clear message that the President has many military options to defeat any threat.

Evans Revere, a former senior diplomat who met with a North Korean delegation in Switzerland this month, said that Pyongyang had been reaching out to "organizations and individuals" to encourage talks with former United States officials to get a sense of the Trump administration's thinking. Furthermore, North Korea's repeated provocations are destabilizing Northeast Asia, making the regime more of a liability rather than a strategic asset for the Chinese government.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis toned down the rhetoric on Tuesday, saying Washington wanted a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
