That is an eight percent drop in viewership from the prior week's game when the Atlanta Falcons beat the Green Bay Packers, and a 10 percent drop from early numbers for last year's equivalent Sunday night game during the third week.

Though many are saying they'll never watch the NFL again after a weekend filled with players taking a knee or silently protesting during the national anthem, ratings for Week 3 are actually expected to increase slightly compared to last season.

Well, despite Donald Trump's claim that NFL ratings are way down and his call to his supporters to have them boycott the league, reports on Tuesday indicate the anthem protests are not turning anyone away. The pre-game show on CBS received its highest rating in seven years, while the network saw a four point surge across the board.

We have never seen a week where more people were interested in National Football League television viewership.

Debate over the national anthem was "a side issue" that's likely to boost ratings for sports talks shows or pre-game shows, but not affect whether people watch the actual games, said Lee Berke, president of consultant LHB Sports Entertainment & Media Inc.

David Weinberg previews, predicts Eagles-Giants game
You can bet that Philadelphia Eagles' defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz will look to take advantage of this weakness. Giants just don't look like a good team and the Eagles will have their home fans behind them.

The overall overnight ratings for the NFL's week 3 games were up 3% compared to the same week past year, according to Nielsen data.

Beyond the game itself, the weather could also have been a factor Sunday night.

While The Wrap speculates that televising the anthem could capitalize on ratings intrigue in the wake of a national news story, "Monday Night Football" and NFL broadcasts at large have seen a big decline in ratings. Maybe more people are enjoying good late summer weather and are staying outside more this year. Almost every Oakland Raider sat on the bench as the national anthem played.

"People are going to tune in for the match-ups, the stars and hometown teams", Berke said.
