Some pilots claim that is the reason for the flight cancellations rather than problems with leave.

The airline offered its existing pilots a tax-free bonus of €12,000 in exchange for agreeing to work extra days, in order to avoid having to cancel even more flights.

Mr O'Leary blamed the crisis on the mismanagement of pilots' holidays.

Robin Kiely, head of communications for Ryanair, said: "Similar to all employers, we can require that employees swap one (or two) weeks of their four-week block holiday, which will be allocated to them later in the year".

It said the cancelations were because of a change in the way pilot's annual leave is calculated.

Ryanair pilots have not threatened industrial action, the airline's chief executive has said.

"Ryanair is well aware of these passenger rights and we have written to the airline to clarify their legal obligations and seek assurances on how and when they will provide alternative flights with other airlines", it added. They will get it back in January. We will be reasonable.

A furious pilot has called into a radio show to explain why they are so angry with the working conditions for pilots in Ryanair.

. "We don't need their agreement.it is in their contracts".

He said that pay for pilots at some of the airline's largest bases "may be a bit on the low side".

He insisted that this was part of normal recruitment and not connected to the current crisis.

Mr O'Leary accused some pilots of being "precious about themselves" and "full of their own self importance".

O'Leary has blasted the "self-important" rebels, saying: "I would challenge any pilot to explain how this is a hard job or how it is they are overworked, or how anybody who by law can't fly more than 18 hours a week could possibly be suffering from fatigue".

Up to 400,000 passengers were affected by the cancellations.

"I seriously regret these cancellations and upsetting and worrying 80 million of our customers last week".

"Michael O'Leary's statements are disgusting, we regularly fly over 40-44 hours in a week, 50-60 duty hours, waking up at 4 am plus commuting long distances".

By the end of the week, Ryanair hopes to have processed over 300,000 alternative routings or refunds for customers.

The airline says the move is to "improve its system-wide punctuality" after a sharp decrease in flights arriving on time in recent weeks.
