Intel Chips Loaded In Waymo Self-Driving Minivans

The partnership between Intel and Waymo began in 2009 when Intel supplied chips for the autonomous programme by Google before collaborating to install and develop autonomous vehicle technology for the Chrysler Minivans. "By working closely with Waymo, Intel can offer Waymo's fleet of vehicles the advanced processing power required for level 4 and 5 autonomy".

The chipmaker admitted it had worked with the company during the design of its compute platform to allow autonomous cars to process information in real time. With Intel, Waymo's autonomous cars have covered more ground than any other fleet of autonomous cars now in operation, acquiring over 3 million miles of cumulative road travel - Waymo's actual mileage is higher than this, however, as the company reached 3 million miles on its own by May, and that's after all the progress it made in 2016.

Apart from the Waymo deal, Intel is also making headway into self driving and autonomy with the chip maker acquiring Mobileye, an auto-visual company, for $15.3bn (£11.31bn).

Waymo's self driving Chrysler Pacifica minivans already have Intel's hardware, but this announcement makes the collaboration formal.

Intel began supplying chips for then-Google's autonomous program beginning in 2009, but that relationship grew into a deeper collaboration when Google began working with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCHA.MI) to develop and install the company's autonomous driving technology into the automaker's minivans.

According to the Reuters news agency, it is the first time Waymo has owned up to using an outside agency's technology. The partnership is nothing new but the whole new platform they announced is going to shake the autonomous market. Those vehicles began test drives at the end of 2016.

Considering 90% of vehicular accidents are caused by human error, self driving cars are an important development, Krzanich said.

This hardware will be installed on Waymo's fleet of Chrysler's Pacifica hybrid minivans.

'Before starting production in October, we'd put these early vehicles through their paces at our own test track in California, and FCA's Chelsea Proving Grounds in Chelsea, MI and their Arizona Proving Grounds in Yucca, AZ.
