With seven points the difference between first and second, even finishing runner-up to Vettel on Sunday would see Hamilton drop four points behind the German.

"I'm still full of adrenaline so maybe whatever I say doesn't make any sense", a breathless Vettel, who let out a loud whoop of joy over the team-radio, said after he stepped out of the vehicle.

"I still believe we can win - I'm still confident we'll get victory", said Ricciardo, who has finished on the podium in the last three straight races in Singapore and came within half a second of victory a year ago.

Ricciardo suggested Red Bull could dominate the Singapore GP after his strong showing on Friday and still expects victory in Sunday's race, despite only qualifying third.

As expected, Mercedes struggled to replicate its usual performance levels throughout qualifying in Singapore, which started with Red Bull seemingly in control. "I thought Red Bull would be as quick as they were", he said.

"At the end of the day, to be second here, on this track, I think it is very promising", said 19-year-old Verstappen, who could have been the youngest driver in the history of the sport to start on pole. "We had a hard night yesterday but a better night today and I'm sure the vehicle will be like today tomorrow, so it will be better but for sure it will be a close race".

"You always go for it if there is a gap and if it's possible, but if not then you just settle down and get into the race". The vehicle was tricky but was getting better, better and better.
