VW's namesake brand, its largest division by sales, will spend 6 billion euros ($7.2 billion) through 2022 on its electric vehicle program which will be based on the new MEB platform underpinning over 20 purely battery-powered models.

That means that by 2030 the company plans to offer an electric or hybrid version of over 300 different auto models.

In the high-end luxury market, Daimler had Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton drive in on stage on the new Mercedes-Benz-AMG Project ONE, a two-seat hybrid with over 1,000 horsepower and a top speed of 350 kph (217 mph), while Rolls-Royce showed off the eighth generation of the Phantom.

The VW Group brands will continue to develop electrified hybrid versions of conventional engines, rather than simply pursue all-electric technology Muller said: "The fact is we still need modern internal combustion engines as a bridge".

According to Mueller, the automotive industry is undergoing an irreversible process of transformation.

He also said that "I think we have to implement a greater presence in Russian Federation and then we have to revive the South American market".

A new CleanAir system has also been developed by Volkswagen for the concept. Mueller on Monday said that diesel remains a key part of the company's strategy.

The move by China, the world's biggest auto market, is sure to accelerate a global shift to electrics.

It's a decision that forms part of a much larger trend pushed both by governments as they look to reduce the air pollution in cities, and auto companies that realise customers are looking for cleaner, more efficient vehicles.

Over the past year, it's unveiled three different Volkswagen ID electric-car concepts, two of them thinly disguised versions of future production models for 2019 and 2020. The namesake brand is presenting the latest design iteration of the fully-electric I.D. Crozz compact crossover and the I.D. Neo hatchback-both come to market in 2020. But those plans will be dwarfed by Volkswagen's electrification push.

Volkswagen (VW), for its part, said it was seeking new global supplier contracts to source €50 billion ($60 billion) of electric vehicle content including batteries, which are not yet manufactured competitively in Europe.

Automakers will be eager to show off technologies that can help people get around without owning a vehicle. Volkswagen's Porsche brand showed off its new Cayenne SUV at an extravagant event August 29 with the Bohemian Symphony Orchestra Prague and dancers livestreamed from its home base in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. He added that VW is setting the scene for a final breakthrough in e-mobility.
