5 dead in Florida nursing home that lost power after Hurricane Irma

Crews were called to the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills on Wednesday morning after residents woke up sick, the Miami Herald reported.

Investigators are seen on September 13, 2017, at a Florida nursing home where multiple people died during Hurricane Irma.

Three died at the nursing home, and three others died after being evacuated to Memorial Healthcare System facilities, city officials said. "Right now I just want to figure this out", he said.

Hospital administrators were told to dial 911 if they believed anyone was at risk, the governor's statement said. Police officials said other patients were in critical care. It had lost power after Hurricane Irma roared through the state.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which regulates nursing homes, gives the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills a below-average rating, two stars on its five-star scale.

Three people were found deceased at the site and three more died later, the police said. Sharief confirmed during a news conference that three residents died at the center and two died at the hospital.

One of the issues facing the nursing homes was ensuring they have enough fuel on hand to power their generators on a continuous basis, she noted. She can't talk or walk.

Irma's wrath came on the heels of Hurricane Harvey, which tore through parts of Texas at the end of August.
