Mane off as City thrash Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits appealing against Sadio Mane's red card in the 5-0 defeat at Manchester City will probably be a waste of time. Mané was running towards the goal of Ederson who had to leave the danger area to clear the ball with a header.

The South American strikers, however, made light of their previous travails, to put Liverpool to the sword, albeit helped generously by the man disadvantage the visitors were under after Mane's dismissal in the 37th minute. "I could not even see Sadio Mane touched him". Klopp hopes he will not have to appeal against the decision, saying: "I don't think about things like this".

The miss out on proven costly as City took the lead two minutes later on, rather versus the run of play.

A key turning point in the game occurred when the Senegal winger was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on City goalkeeper Ederson.

Whether Mane had eyes only for the ball is immaterial - he lost control and kicked an opponent in the face. Yes, it looked bad at first, but it is unlucky to play against City with 10 men. "That changed the game and we know it".

Premier League predictions: Chelsea to keep up winning momentum, Spurs to bounce back, West Ham and Crystal Palace to lose

Klopp said they have training drills with seven defending against fourteen, but the ten against eleven could not hold City out.

After the game, Ederson tweeted: "Hi, everyone - I am well". Klopp's side struggled with the alien 3-5-1 system and the withdrawal of Mohamed Salah, presumably with Wednesday night's visit of Sevilla in mind, left them without a counter-attacking outlet.

During the first half, de Bruyne split a killer pass to Aguero for the opening goal and emerged as the creative fulcrum of the team, stretching opposition defenders out of position and also assisting with crosses.

"I wanted to use my chance today and it was a good day for me", Sane said, "and I especially enjoyed the second goal". In many ways, those 90 minutes served as the ideal illustration of both teams' strengths and weaknesses. "You have to take what you get and make the best of it". They didn't create many things.

'But we didn't, and that's what the first half was like, we weren't compact enough and didn't cause them enough problems. Instead of seeking reinforcements in the transfer window, Klopp intends for his side to iron out their defensive issues by simply getting better at what he's been asking them to do since day one.
