If you're the type of film geek who treats box office returns like a spectator sport (it me), this is exciting stuff!

The new film is directed by Andy Muschietti, who also helmed 2013's horror movie Mama, and topped the United Kingdom box office following its opening weekend with £9,884,000 across 604 cinemas, film studio Warner Bros said. The R-rated horror film should make a whopping $117.2 million from 4,103 locations, far surpassing earlier expectations.

"It" was also the third biggest opening of the year after Disney's ' Beauty and the Beast" and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2'.

The film now has the largest September opening in cinematic history, the largest fall opening ever, and the largest opening weened for an R-rated horror movie.

It's opening weekend also crushes the box office record for a film opening in September, previously held by Hotel Transylvania 2 which opened to $48.5 million in 2015. That's even with less theaters showing the movie thanks to Hurricane Irma in Florida forcing the closure of 175 theaters this weekend.

The Alamo Draft House in Austin, Texas, was hosting a clown-only screening of the Andres Muschietti-directed film - and many others just chose to take matters into their own hands. It also has the largest opening weekend for a horror film with any MPAA rating.

As children begin to disappear in the town of Derry in ME, a young group of children that are often seen as the outcasts of society are faced with tackling their biggest fears, squaring off against the evil entity that is Pennywise the clown.

It has been rated R in the U.S. and is rated 15 in the UK.

"It" is terrorising the box office all over the world.

"There's something really special about the story itself, the way the movie was made, and the marketing".

"'It" put some much needed air back in the box office balloon", said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. Stephen King has announced that the movie is in the working and that there might be more in the future.
