McMaster reports successful evacuation, warns of Irma storm surge

Limited Coastal evacuations are set to begin at 10am Saturday.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster says evacuations in the state could begin Saturday morning unless the forecast for Hurricane Irma makes a big change.

Governor McMaster has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Florida Governor Rick Scott that will provide assistance from first responders, law enforcement and other agencies here in SC.

Due to the potential impact of Hurricane Irma, residents on those islands should prepare to evacuate their homes beginning tomorrow, Saturday, September 9 at 10:00 AM. "We are taking a very cautious approach" said Major General Bob Livingston. The agencies on these coordination calls share information and discuss emergency plans in advance of any response to the storm."It's too soon to rule out any possibilities", Stenson said "Hurricane Irma is a unsafe storm and its projected path could put SC in harm's way". But western parts of the state are still in Monday's forecast cone as Irma diminishes from a hurricane to a tropical depression.

"We have a lot of people trained to respond", McMaster said.

More than 42,000 were forced to evacuate Hilton Head Island Saturday morning.

Officials said the evacuation of medical facilities in Jasper, Beaufort, Colleton facilities is going well.

Traffic on South Carolina's highways is already heavier than normal with residents fleeing Irma's projected path.

In its current track, the eye of Irma is set to make landfall over the southern portion of Florida on Sunday night and make its way north, nearing south Georgia by Monday.
