Alabama close to being a unanimous No. 1 in both polls

MI defeated Florida in its opener to rise in the rankings.

While week one of the college football season was certainly eventful, it brought no change in the conference power rankings.

No. 11 MI was one of those aforementioned slow starters on Saturday, putting themselves behind against a depleted No. 17 Florida team. The TCU Horned Frogs. who could sneak into the top 25 this week, will also have a marquee nonconference game at Arkansas. But the Wolverines hunkered down in the second half and outscored the Gators 20-0 with a dominating performance on defense., winning by a final score of 33-17.

Florida State not only lost a game in the standings as well as its star quarterback this past Saturday night, but it lost its grip on the No. 3 spot in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, which was released on Tuesday.

The Big Ten remains well represented near the top of the polls.

MI is one of four Big Ten schools ranked in each poll. Taking over those spots in the Top Five are No. 4 Penn State (No. 6 in preseason poll) and No. 5 Oklahoma (No. 7).

Washington and USC both started the season with wins but dropped in our rankings, a reaction to their early-game struggles with Rutgers and Western Michigan, respectively.

Clemson jumped to No. 3 from its 5th place preseason ranking.
