Why Monza is a big test of Vettel's bold claim

Alonso, who briefly ran Honda's latest engine early in FP1, switched back to the power unit he used in Belgium last weekend for the remainder of the day - a tactic meant to permit the team to test their prime engine in readiness for the Singapore Grand Prix where they hope and expect to be strong.

Hamilton was 0.435 seconds clear of his Finnish team-mate as he delivered the pace to suggest he may be able to dominate the weekend, win Sunday's race and take the championship lead from Vettel for the first time this year.

Hamilton said he has not once been tempted to seek a move away from Mercedes, with whom he has won two of his three world titles since joining from McLaren ahead of the 2013 season.

"It's a special place", said Mr. Vettel. "Pretty awesome memories and when I walked the track this morning there are some pictures coming back". Saturday to have the Pole, and to win the race on Sunday the way we did. "I am looking forward to it". "We can improve the vehicle and if we sort a couple of things out, we should be in good shape".

"I don't know who will win".

Away from the top two, one of the biggest talking points has been the constant clashes between Force India duo Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon - but the team don't plan on letting that happen again. "When I turn up here at the gate, obviously there are a lot of Ferrari fans here, and maybe at least 50 per cent of them say "Come to Ferrari, come to Ferrari".

Liverpool Accept Stonking Fee Offer For Out-Of-Favour Mamadou Sakho
Palace have finally reached an agreement with Liverpool for the transfer, with the fee believed to be in the region of £26m. The French worldwide made eight appearances on loan at Palace last season, but had his spell cut short with a knee injury.

"You're both fighting for yourself but you're also fighting for the team, so it's something you need to keep in the back of your mind. But we got our full plan done", Bottas said. Alonso is expected to take a 35-place grid penalty, another setback in his long run of disappointments with the team. We are OK, there are a couple of things we need to do better, auto balance, stability, braking, which is important round here to get the confidence. "If we have to be strategic about it then OK". Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) - 132 points 5. "It has been 2½ years since I joined the team and I think the progress has been enormous". "We're staring down the barrel at a bunch of penalties at Monza".

"Initially in FP1 we went slightly in the wrong direction with the setup, but we managed to change it around for FP2 and the vehicle felt a lot better. The Monza podium is simply awesome".

This ultimately brings it down to who has the best power plant/ vs natural downforce ratio for the track.

For both teams there is also a balance to be struck between developing the current vehicle and switching resources to next year's, to ensure that they do not start the 2018 season on the back foot. If Ferrari can pull off an upset, then conventional wisdom goes out the window - and suddenly there would be cause to view Vettel as the championship favourite.

Ferrari have not won a drivers' championship for a decade, with Vettel's current team mate Kimi Raikkonen the last in 2007.
