Warnings for popular Mexico spots

USA citizens have been the victims of violent crimes including homicide, kidnapping, carjacking and robbery, said State Department officials.

Here's what you need to know about the latest Mexico travel warning.

Gun battles between rival criminal groups or with Mexican authorities have taken place on streets and in public places during broad daylight, officials said. "While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted criminal organization assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by USA citizens".

Mexico tourists are also advised to use toll roads whenever possible, because carjackers have murdered US citizens, most often at night and in isolated locations.

The U.S. State Department issued a travel warning Tuesday for popular Mexico tourist destinations due to criminal activity. While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted, criminal organization assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by US citizens.

Yet tourist meccas like the beach resorts of Quintana Roo and Baja California Sur have the potential to be hard hit by such injunctions.

As a result of the warning, the State Department has provided a state-by-state assessment of security conditions throughout Mexico. In Nayarit, which includes the Riviera Nayarit coast, USA government personnel are allowed to travel using major highways, but intercity travel at night is prohibited.

For years, both regions were largely insulated from the drug war violence that has engulfed other parts of Mexico, but this year they have each seen a major uptick in killings. In Baja California Sur, which includes Los Cabos, the homicide rate has been on the rise since previous year. The violence has led to innocent people being killed as bystanders, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Mexico City remains without an advisory.
