Trolls force Google to cancel gender memo meeting

More than 5,000 Google employees had used an internal tool to rank the questions they most wanted Pichai to answer.

"The engineer's MANifesto also slams Google for not being a friendly place for conservatives, which is odd since conservatives spend a good bit of their time mocking the idea of safe spaces", Huppke writes.

Though one might argue for a right to free speech, however unpopular, such protections are generally limited to government and other public employees - and to unionized workers with rights to disciplinary hearings before any firing. Screenshots of internal Google+ posts were leaked, images that showed various employees criticizing Damore's memo. And some are anxious that you can not speak out at work freely.

Pichai had cut his vacation short for the town hall, where he planned to bring together employees to discuss the tensions ignited by a memo circulated inside the company that claimed to explain why more women are not engineers.

Former Google engineer James Damore was at the limelight for all the wrong reasons this week, after writing a memo stating that women are not biologically suited for some technological types of work.

"But while people may have a right to express their beliefs in public, that does not mean companies can not take action when women are subjected to comments that perpetuate negative stereotypes about them based on their gender", wrote Ms. Wojcicki, one of the most powerful women at Google.

Pichai, a 13-year veteran at Google, has been in his role as CEO for nearly two years now.

The Treasury said Mexican authorities also "seized diverse assets" belonging to Hernandez, including a Guadalajara casino. Rafael Marquez was one of 21 people and 42 organisations singled out by the USA treasury department for sanctions.

Terming the situation a "very hard time", Pichai said suggestions that a group of people have traits that make them "less biologically suited" to work is "offensive and not OK".

But attempts to encourage white men to write diversity memos is clearly social engineering run amok. "We'll continue to stand for that and be committed to it for the long haul", according to Bloomberg Technology.

In late June, Google announced the hiring of Danielle Brown as its new head of diversity. Other concerns included how to make it clear that Google did not have lower standards for hiring women and minorities, and what it could do to make political conservatives feel more welcome.

It seems much more likely that Damore got fired for telling Google execs about the perceived consequences within the organization of opposing its ideological bent. The protest's organizers say they are reaching out to Damore to speak.

The possible lawsuit will reportedly build on the US Department of Labor's probe into allegations of Google systematically underpaying its female staff. This also led to doubting the culture of the company which differentiates employees based on sexism and the female employees suffer less pay even after having equal qualification, capabilities and even positions.

"It's definitely a defining moment for Google, for our culture", said Maggie Johnson, Google vice president of education. "You belong here, and we need you", said a report in The Verge on Friday, quoting Pichai.

"If we can't have an honest discussion about this, then we can never truly solve the problem", wrote Damore. At Google, 56 percent of the 441 employees surveyed opposed their company's decision to fire Damore.
