Marquez sanctioned for alleged drug trafficking

While the Treasury's statement did not say Marquez will face any charges in the USA, the ruling states all of Marquez's assets under US jurisdiction or in control of people in the USA will be frozen.

The Treasury said Mexican authorities also "seized diverse assets" belonging to Hernandez, including a Guadalajara casino.

The Department said Flores Hernandez has operated independently since the 1980s but "maintains strategic alliances" with other Mexican drug cartel leaders, including the Sinaloa group.

"Longstanding relationship with Flores Hernandez. acted as front persons for him and his DTO (drug trafficking organisation) and held assets on their behalf", the US Treasury Department's statement read.

The U.S. statement did not say whether Marquez or any of the others sanctioned face charges in the United States, but the ruling reportedly means that any assets they possess under USA jurisdiction will be frozen.

43 entities in Mexico, including a football team and casino, will also be sanctioned according to the report. The trafficking organization was originally headed by a Raul Flores Hernandez, and this is the culmination of a multi-year investigation into the organization.

The 38-year-old Marquez now serves as captain of both the Mexican national team, as well as Atlas, a club located in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Marquez denied any involvement with Flores Hernandez. In March 2017, federal drug trafficking indictments were returned in the District of Columbia and the Southern District of California against Flores Hernandez.

The U.S. statement did not say that Marquez or Alvarez face charges in the United States. Marquez also played in Europe with AS Monaco, FC Barcelona and Hellas Verona, in Mexico with Leon and in Major League Soccer with the New York Red Bulls.

He became the first player to captain his national team at four separate World Cups (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014) and is widely considered one of the premier players in the country's illustrious soccer history.

Rafael Marquez was one of 21 people and 42 organisations singled out by the USA treasury department for sanctions. Among the entities that the department cited were his soccer academy and health and rehabilitation clinics.
