Warren handed himself into a police station in San Francisco on Friday evening while Lathem gave himself up at 7.30pm in Oakland, Supervisory Deputy US Marshal Frank Conroy said. Warren has been suspended from his post as the senior treasury assistant at Somerville College, Britain's Oxford Mail reports.

The two men are suspected in the July 27 murder of Trenton Cornell-Duranleau, 26.

Speaking with USA Today, Mr Guglielmi said: "Police arrived at Lathem's apartment shortly after an employee at the building's front desk notified authorities of an anonymous call about a crime in the professor's apartment".

When Northwestern officials learned of the murder investigation Monday, they placef Lathem on administrative leave and barred him from campus.

Lathem and Warren could not be reached for comment.

At one point Lathem sent his friends and family and video telling them that the crime was the worst decision of his life.

Chicago police said the two will go before an Oakland court and be returned to Chicago.

Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said: "Both individuals will be held accountable for their actions and we hope today's arrest brings some comfort for the victim's family".
