Special counsel Robert Mueller has impaneled a grand jury to investigate Russia's interference in the 2016 elections, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has impaneled a grand jury to investigate Russia's interference in the 2016 U.S. election, in what amounts to a dramatic escalation of the continuing scandal.

Moscow denies any meddling and Trump denies any collusion by his campaign, while regularly denouncing the investigations as political witch hunts.

It's unclear whether Mueller impaneled a new grand jury or is using an existing one.

Mueller empaneled a grand jury Thursday in Washington, D.C., a move that will likely accelerate the conclusion of the Russian Federation investigation.

Trump's lawyer, Jay Sekulow, said Thursday on Fox News that they have "no reason to believe that the President is under investigation here". Mueller was empowered to follow the evidence wherever it led when he was appointed, even if the evidence led to crimes unconnected to Trump and/or Trump campaign officials colluding with the Russians.

The Wall Street Journal was first to report that the legal team of special counsel Robert Mueller has started up a grand jury.

NIAC Action Statement on President Trump Signing New Iran Sanctions Into Law

When asked about the grand jury, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House Press Secretary said that Jim Comey, the FBI director fired by President Donald Trump, told the president three times that he was not under investigation.

He added: "The White House is committed to fully cooperating with Mr. Mueller".

Grand juries are members of the public who meet in secret to hear evidence.

The younger Trump has said that the meeting did not produce any valuable information and that he had no further contact with the Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya. Yet, Mueller expanded the investigation a couple weeks ago when he announced his team would also be taking a look at Trump's former business transactions.

White House special counsel Ty Cobb claimed that he was unaware of the development. NPR reported that Mueller is using a grand jury in D.C.

Trump has continuously blamed Democrats for the Russian Federation investigation, despite the fact that Mueller was appointed by the deputy attorney general Trump himself picked, and before that, Mueller was nominated as head of the FBI by former President George W. Bush.
