Fox's comments were made in the USA before Hammond hit the airwaves on Friday, yet they underscored the level of distrust that seems to pervade May's cabinet since she lost her party's parliamentary majority in an election gamble in June.

'We need to maintain flexibility, but it can not retain the current rules because that would not be delivering the will of the people.

"It can't just be made by an individual or any group within the Cabinet". This position appears at odds with Hammond's signal that free movement would continue for a limited period in all but name, with the added requirement that migrants would have to register in the UK. She fired the first salvo on Thursday, saying there would be no sudden clampdown on European Union migrants to Britain the day after Brexit.

Rudd is a close ally of Theresa May, and campaigned to remain in the EU.

The announcement comes amid rumors of uncertainty and infighting within the Cabinet over various issues including the critical matter of immigration and free movement after Brexit.

"We have published proposals on citizens" rights.

Hammond made clear on Friday that European Union migrants were unlikely to be turned away at the border after March 2019, so long as they register when coming in and out of the country.

Iranian Satellite Launch Suffered "Catastrophic Failure"
Sanctions were introduced against Iran for its missile program, alleged human rights abuses and what the USA claims Iran's "destabilizing" role in the Middle East.

"Other elements of the post-Brexit immigration system will be brought forward in due course". It would be wrong to speculate what these might look like or suggest free movement will continue as it is'.

"But she also said: 'By this I do not mean that we will seek some form of unlimited transitional status in which we find ourselves stuck forever in some kind of permanent political purgatory".

In January, Hammond told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag that he was optimistic that Britain would negotiate a good trade deal with the European Union but if it did not secure a deal, "you can be sure we will do whatever we have to do".

The row followed Mr Hammond's latest intervention in which he suggested the Government had all but abandoned the threat to walk away without a deal if Brussels tried to punish the UK. "That is not our project or our vision for the future".

May's government is divided over Brexit, and ministers have been sending mixed signals.

An EU official, who spoke to EUobserver on condition of anonymity, said that Hammond's scenario for a simple transitional deal, which would the main elements of the existing relationship, would give more time for the United Kingdom to negotiate the future relationship with the EU.

"This is entirely predictable given that the Prime Minister is still at heart a remainer and put remainers in key positions to achieve a remain result".
