It began with a simple text message and ended with a Grand Slam trophy.

"(Men's) doubles is obviously my biggest goal of the year", said former doubles number one Murray.

Heather Watson won the mixed doubles alongside Henri Kontinen in 2016, beating Robert Farah and Anna-Lena Gronefeld in the final.

Jamie Murray is bidding to win the mixed doubles for a second time, after triumphing with Jelena Jankovic 10 years ago. This year's run represents the only other time the Briton has made it past the third round of a Slam doubles event, mixed or otherwise.

"I hope it's a full crowd and everybody gets involved".

Murray, though, did not see the text until the following morning. "I'm just happy it was mine". I was like, "Oh, my God, did he read it?" I'm not used to no! But I would understand, especially here, it's always tough. 'But I'd love to play with Henri again'.

Their victory was the flawless way for the pair to celebrate important landmarks in both of their respective careers, as yesterday marked 20 years since Hingis beat Jana Novotna in the women's singles final, while a decade ago Murray was celebrating his first mixed doubles title, alongside Jelena Jankovic.

Sunday's win took her overall Grand Slam tally to 23 and five of her six mixed wins have come since the beginning of 2015.

The Scot admitted that, had it been anyone else asking, he probably would have said no.

'It was a great opportunity for me to have a great shot to win, ' said Murray. It's going to take something pretty special to kind of maybe potentially take my eye off the ball with it. 'But it was a great opportunity.

Depending on the stage of a player's career, though, mixed doubles can be more than just the chance to top up the bank balance. "I don't know if he snuck a few points in or not". It was an easy decision'.

The pair, who only got together shortly before the tournament, edged a tight contest, in which they gained advantage from breaking the Watson serve three times.

Kontinen, the men's doubles No. 1, pressured them with his power, and Watson hit some fine returns, but the experience of Hingis, in particular, was crucial.
