Heavy rains forecast in South Odisha districts in next 72 hours

"With prompt response we have been able to rescue most people affected by flash floods in Nagabali and Kalyani rivers in Raygada district", tweeted Mr Patnaik.

The weather office said Ganjam, Kandhamal, Balangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri districts are slated to receive heavy rain over next 72 hours. The State government on Sunday sought help of Army and IAF to evacuate villagers marooned by floodwaters. A defence official was quoted by PTI as saying that as it is not possible to rescue the people through boat and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force, the assistance of Indian Air Force is required for the rescue operation and airdrop of relief material in the affected areas of Rayagada district.

"Closely monitoring flood situation; every effort being made to reach the affected with food, medicines and supplies".

Mi-17 V5 helicopters of IAF had been asked for the relief and rescue operations.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik rushed to control room of Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) to take stock of the situation. The district administration has also started serving cooked food to the people taking shelter in schools.

Notably, road communication between Rayagada and Bhawanipatna has been disrupted as flood water is now flowing on the major road in the area which is now completely cut-off.

It also declared closure of schools and colleges for three days in Kalyansinghpur block in view of the flood situation.

According to East Coast Railway, the flash floods affected train services in the Rayagada-Titilagarh railway section as Railway bridge No 585 between Therubali and Singapur Road railway stations was washed away.

The Meteorological Department of Bhubaneswar Director Sarat Sahu said that the low pressure is had formed over north-west Bay of Bengal off north Odisha.
