Disney Casts Live-Action Aladdin and Jasmine Following Backlash

One star has apparently already signed on for the role of Genie, originally made famous by Robin Williams.

Disney announced the cast of its upcoming live-action "Aladdin" remake during the D23 Expo in Anaheim on Saturday.

If the casting process for Disney's highly anticipated live-action Aladdin update from Guy Ritchie seems to have been moving at a slow pace, you're not imagining things.

Newcomer Mena Massoud is taking the leading role as Aladdin.

Mena Massoud will play Aladdin in the live-action adaptation.

So far the young star only has a handful of acting credits, including Jack Ryan, Open Heart, and The 99.

Global casting calls were launched in May with production set to begin in July, but filming was pushed back to August after none of the almost 2,000 people who auditioned were deemed the ideal fit. That's not least that they need to find someone to play the villain, Jafar, as well as various other roles.

The English star was born in Hounslow and has also appeared in The Martian and The 33, as well as starring as The Pink Ranger in 2017s superhero film Power Rangers.

An official release date has not been set, though Aladdin was not included in their 2017-2019 lineup.
