The email exchange suggested Trump Jr. was eager about the possibility of meeting with the Russian lawyer who was supposed to have incriminating information on 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Congress is keen to take a stronger line against Russian Federation despite Trump pushing for a warmer relationship.

"We're talking with the Democratic members about it, trying to put together a bipartisan bill, and we're moving forward", the California Republican said.

"Just like the revelations that came up today, we need to have more oversight and more answers coming from the Trump administration in terms of their relationship with Russian Federation, not less -- and this is a good opportunity", Rep. Ruben Gallego, an Arizona Democrat with several amendments pending, told CNN.

The administration officials, who were career civil servants, expressed concerns during the meeting about the congressional review provisions in the bill, which would give Congress veto power if the White House tries to loosen sanctions on Russian Federation, according to the staffers.

Officials from the Treasury and State departments met last week with House congressional staff in a belated attempt to voice their concerns over the congressional review. Only one Republican, Sen. "We passed exactly what they wanted", Senate Foreign Relations committee chairman Bob Corker told reporters.

"Any administration would prefer to conduct foreign policy 100 percent without involvement by Congress". A White House statement said Trump and Salman discussed diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute. "That has never occurred", he said. And that could leave Congress at least at an impasse that, if it extends to the August recess, would mean that it could be months before any sanctions measures against Russian Federation or North Korea proceed.

US House Speaker Ryan - Trump's son should testify in Congress
Grassley declined to comment on whether he thought there was anything criminal in Trump Jr .'s meeting with Veselnitskaya. President Donald Trump announced his nominee for Federal Bureau of Investigation director in a post on Twitter June 7.

Ashley Etienne, a spokeswoman for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, said that Democrats have been demanding for weeks, to no avail, that the House Republican leadership bring the sanctions bill to the floor for a vote.

"All of a sudden, the day before recess, the House Democrats said wait a minute-this doesn't give us the ability to amend congressional review", he said.

Trump's comments came as the House struggles for a way forward on a Russian Federation sanctions bill that cleared the Senate with 98 votes last month.

Speaker Paul Ryan and House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Ed Royce have also expressed a desire to get the legislation passed. The national trade association representing oil and gas companies said the bill could harm US energy companies while strengthening the hand of Russian businesses. Earlier this week, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson visited the region, saying he made proposals that would help to defuse the issue.

On Friday, the Associated Press reported there was another person in the meeting not disclosed by Trump Jr.

Her remarks were part of a news conference in which Democrats from various House committees detailed steps aimed at pressuring House Republicans to investigate Trump more aggressively. But progress on the measure slowed nearly immediately.

According to the US Constitution, any bill that raises revenue for the US government must originate in the House of Representatives.
