Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley wrote a letter to secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson asking how the Russian attorney who met with President Donald Trump a year ago was allowed in the country.

Grassley, Iowa's senior Republican senator, serves as chairman of the judiciary committee - one of several committees conducting investigations into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian government to influence the 2016 presidential election.

Grassley said the committee would call Manafort to testify to learn why he didn't file as a foreign agent before becoming involved in the US presidential campaign.

Trump Jr., in addition to being the president's son, was deeply involved in his presidential campaign.

Trump Jr. told Fox News' Sean Hannity Tuesday night that he would be willing to testify under oath about the meeting, which he said yielded no useful information and instead focused on adoptions.

U.S intelligence agencies said earlier this year that Russian Federation sought to help Trump win the election by hacking private emails from Democratic Party officials and disseminating false information online.

The legislators spoke the next day after Trump Jr. released some emails that showed his willingness to listen to the damaging materials about Clinton y the Russian lawyer.

Grassley declined to comment on whether he thought there was anything criminal in Trump Jr.'s meeting with Veselnitskaya.

Grassley said there will be a hearing within days on the lax enforcement.

"I just think he would welcome the opportunity to say whatever he wants to say", Grassley said about the younger Trump.

Trump also said in a tweet that his son was "open, transparent and innocent" and again dismissed the ongoing Russian Federation investigation as the "greatest Witch Hunt in political history". He was told the Russian government had information that could "incriminate" Clinton and her dealings with Russia.

President Trump continued to downplay the issue, saying that "nothing happened" as a result of the meeting.

President Donald Trump announced his nominee for Federal Bureau of Investigation director in a post on Twitter June 7.

After the New York Times initially reported the meeting, Trump Jr. said that he believed he would be given opposition research against Clinton and maintained that he did nothing wrong or out of the ordinary.
