Ajax midfielder Abdelhak Nouri has suffered serious and permanent brain damage after he collapsed during Saturday's friendly against Werder Bremen, the Eredivisie club have confirmed.

It was confirmed that Nouri woke from an induced coma but doctors confirmed the frightful news this afternoon, after a set of examinations and tests were done.

"I want to say again, all of the strength and all of the thoughts are with him, and of course when the work goes onto the pitch then you have to do it, but on days like this it is not easy".

Tests today have sadly revealed the extent of Nouri's brain damage, which according to a club statement is said to be "serious and permanent".

Seven Hindu pilgrims killed in militant attack in Indian Kashmir
They denied reports that the militants had originally attacked a police checkpost, and the bus happened to be there. Separatist groups in Kashmir have condemned the attack, saying it "goes against the very grain of Kashmiri ethos".

Nouri - known as "Appie" - made 15 appearances for Ajax's first team last season, including three in the Europa League, and scored on his senior debut in a 5-0 win over Willem II in the KNVB-Beker.

The 20-year-old was taken to hospital by helicopter after collapsing during the pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen in Austria. The game in Zillertal in the Austrian Alps was abandoned after the 70th-minute incident.

Nouri, one of Ajax's up-and-coming prospects, made his debut for the 33-time Dutch champions in September a year ago during a cup against Willem II. "It's been a real shock to Ajax even though we knew this was a possible scenario". It is bad. We feel enormously for his parents, siblings and other relatives. It is greatly appreciated.

"Abdelhak is such a great talent, but unfortunately we will never know how far this star would have reached".
