U.S. military plane crash in MS kills 16 people

The aircraft was originally based out of New York's Stewart Air National Guard Base, Marine Corps officials said.

A KC-130, used as a refueling tanker, "experienced a mishap" when it corkscrewed into a soybean field about 4 p.m. Monday at a location around 85 miles north of Jackson, the Marine Corps said.

Seven of the service members killed in the crash were an elite Marine unite based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, the Marine Corps said Tuesday.

This morning, Richard V. Spencer, President Donald Trump's nominee for Navy secretary, testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee that 15 Marines and one sailor was killed in Monday's crash. "It was one of the worst fires you can imagine", Jones said.

The KC-130 Hercules, manufactured by Lockheed Martin Corp, conducts air-to-air refueling, carries cargo and performs tactical passenger missions.

All 16 victims were on the plane and there were no survivors from the aircraft.

There were conflicting reports early on as to how many people were killed as first responders began to recover bodies from the crash site.

President Trump expressed his condolences in a tweet this morning: "Marine Plane crash in MS is heartbreaking".

The plane left Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, and was on its way to Naval Air Facility El Centro, California, when it crashed, officials said.

Marine Corps spokeswoman Capt. Sarah Burns confirmed that the crash occurred but did not give any further details.

The plane crashed in a field of soybean, according to the newspaper, which published pictures showing a thick plume of smoke rising from a field and rescue teams.
