Lockheed's Australian arm and Naval Group will collaborate with Australia's defense department to produce a fleet of 12 submarines for the Royal Australian Navy, Lockheed said Sunday.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull spent last night in London with his British counterpart Theresa May, with the pair visiting the site of the Borough Market terror attack.

The companies expect the new office to add at least 50 Australian employees to work on the program.

'It will be largely focused on national security, ' Mr Turnbull told reporters.

The attackers killed South Australian nurse Kirsty Boden and Queenslander Sara Zelenak.

Mr Turnbull said there were no two countries that trusted each other more than Australia and the UK.

At a joint news conference in London with British Prime Minister Theresa May, Turnbull was asked how long it would take to secure a trade deal after Brexit.

"We stand shoulder to shoulder now, as we always have, in freedom's cause today, defying and defeating the Islamist terrorists that seek to do us harm, to seek to destroy our way of life and prevent us from living our way of life as we always have".

Earlier, Mr Turnbull hit back at his conservative critics anxious about the direction of the Liberal Party, defending the party as one of freedom, liberalism and the "sensible centre".

"The prime minister should make clear that Australia will still be a commonwealth country if Australians vote to become a republic at some future date - whether during the Queen's reign or after it", ARM said in a statement.

The meeting between May and Turnbull - who sparred in debates at Oxford University together - covered trade, intelligence co-operation, counter-terrorism and the North Korean threat and came following the G20 in Hamburg.

In a wide-ranging address in defence of the party's Liberal tradition that also touched on counterterrorism and migration policy, Mr Turnbull advocated a pragmatic path that rejected the ideological extremes of both the Left and Right.

"The three of us did our best not to burst into tears".

"The sensible centre was the place to be".
