Facebook has temporarily slashed the price of its Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, selling it for $399 complete with a Touch controller.

This is not, however, the first time that Oculus cut down the Oculus Rift's price as it did discount it down to US$598 in March which was US$200 cheaper than the original price.

There are stacks of games now available through the Oculus online store, more than 500 in fact, including Star Trek: Bridge Crew, Batman: Arkham VR and Elite Dangerous.

At just $399, Oculus is fighting the good fight with mainstream consoles that are priced at under $400 like the Xbox One S and PS4. The HTC Vive costs $800. Oculus vice president of content Jason Rubin says Oculus is trying to "prime the pump and make sure there's plenty of people coming to VR". Of that total, approximately 99,300 were sold by Facebook (NASDAQ: FB) subsidiary Oculus VR. According to market research firm SuperData, Samsung Electronics (SSNLF) is the undisputed victor with its Gear VR headset, which shipped 782,000 virtual reality headsets during the first quarter of the year.

"Somebody who goes out and buys a Rift (on sale) is not going to find themselves with hardware that's outdated any time soon", he said. Rubin stated that the company has already said that it will take some time for VR to be accepted by the masses. HTC jumped in and is competing successfully with Oculus with the Vive VR headset. That likely has a lot to do with the aforesaid price cut which brought the entire package down to $600 which was the original cost of the standalone Rift.

Price always pays a big part in a device's success and if VR headsets are expensive to begin with and also require expensive computers to work with, their success could be limited on financial constraints alone.
