Fires prompt state of emergency in western Canada

The entire District of 100 Mile House is also under an evacuation alert, as well as several properties near 150 Mile House.

The fire is 15 hectares in size and BC Wildfire Service has deployed 35 firefighters and three fire officers as well as three helicopters to battle the fire.

"Fires are being reported faster than they can be written down - all over the Cariboo", the Cariboo Regional District Emergency Operations Centre said late Friday on its Facebook page.

The fire forced Highway 1 to shut down in both directions between Ashcroft and Cache Creek, while Highway 97C running through Ashcroft was also closed.

A cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but fire origin and cause personnel are on their way to investigate.

As many as 3,000 homeowners have been told to evacuate their properties in central BC as the wind-fanned wildfire threatens their properties.

Two evacuee emergency centers were opened, one at the 100 Mile House Rink and the other at the Ramada Inn in Williams Lake.

Fire Information Officer Kevin Skrepnek says it doesn't look like the fire is going to let up anytime soon. "Given the conditions we're seeing out there, it sounds like there is potentially some wind in the forecast".

A reception centre for evacuees has been set up in Kamloops at the McArthur Island Sport Park.
