Arriving at the court earlier, Cosby was accompanied by one of his movie co-stars from the 1970s. The two had met through Cosby's alma mater, Temple University, where Constand was on the basketball staff.

Ms Constand said the mood at the time was friendly. "They'll take the edge off".

Constand says she visited the comedian at his home outside Philadelphia one evening for dinner and to discuss her career plans. "I felt Mr. Cosby's hand groping my breasts under my shirt".

The 79-year-old Cosby could spend the rest of his life in prison if convicted.

Under the terms of that settlement, Constand was unable to speak publicly about the alleged assault until her courtroom testimony on Tuesday. The trial kicked off yesterday, with Cosby's lawyer Brian McMonagle attempting to present his client as a man who has been framed and telling the jury that "the only thing that is worse than [sexual assault] is the false accusation of sexual assault".

Johnson gave the deposition while pursuing a claim that she'd developed debilitating stress from her job as a secretary at the talent agency representing Cosby.
