The national Amateur Radio Field Day not only allows operators to show off their skills and reach out to as many operators as they can from coast-to-coast and throughout Canada, it also lets them practice their skills so they can help their community in the case of an emergency.

The Rochester club has about 60 active members.

Dan Eaton has been a member of the local club for three years and brought his portable antenna to this field day.

He added many amateur radio operators locally volunteer with or are a part of Aiken County and Edgefield's emergency management divisions.

In terms of competition, however, Matt Arthur "is our number-one point-getter", mostly due to Arthur's alacrity with Morse code, he said.

"We're all getting older", he said.

And while it may have sounded the same when Samuel Morse's invention linked the world in the 19th century, it is just as vital today as a communication tool, especially in the event of natural disasters and emergencies, Yokanovich said.

The summer and winter field days are organized yearly by the American Radio Relay League, he said.

Inside, on two ham radio stations, members of the Scranton, Pa.,-Pocono Amateur Radio Klub called out "K-3-C-S-G" across the airwaves. "We talked about politics and world events and the weather".

"That kind of blended over to the amateur radio operations", the Scranton resident said. The members have their own station numbers and the club has it's own, which is W8HH. Others like to network with a group of operators at the same time. "It's tricky, because it's like a train coming towards you".

Eddy, the club's vice president, used to be half-owner and general manager of radio station 93.9 FM in St. Marys. He makes brief contacts to see what he can pick up. "When it's going away, it's changing frequency, too".
