Despite mainstream media reports that Hassanen was killed at the hands of an anti-Muslim attacker, police said Torres' actions were due to "road rage". Detectives are continuing to investigate and say that if they discover information or evidence that would indicate this was hate-motivated they'll file additional charges.

Although police said there was no indication religious hatred was the motive for the crime, Mahmoud Hassanen wondered why the children, wearing traditional Muslim attire, were targeted.

At one point, the motorist got out of his auto and assaulted the teen, police said. Torres became so furious after arguing with one of the teens he drove up on a curb, police said.

Martinez Torres caught up with them in a nearby vehicle park, got out of his auto armed with a baseball bat and began chasing the group, she added. "She's like humble. She was very nice, you know, I'm very sad", said Abas Sherif, a family friend and spokesperson.

The victim was identified as 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen of Reston and her body was found in a pond on Sunday, The Washington Post reported. But a statement sent to CNN from the Virginia Lt. Governor's office said that "detectives and relatives believe the body found is Nabra Hassanen". "Immediately thereafter, the ADAMS' personnel notified both Loudon County and Fairfax County authorities who immediately began an extensive search to locate the missing girl", the statement explained.

Torres has later been charged with murder.

Anonymous family members of Torres' told The Post that he originally hails from El Salvador.

Torres couldn't be reached for comment and CNN could not determine if he has retained a lawyer.

Like many states, Virginia defines a hate crime as any crime "perpetrated because of race, religion, or ethnic origin".

"I know I said that out of fear, and just feeling helpless". "Even if not, why is this individual targeting a group of people dressed in Muslim attire?"

"We are devastated and heartbroken as our community undergoes and processes this traumatic event", the society said in a statement.
