A spokesperson with the Israeli military said that the attack came in response to 10 projectiles from Syria that hit the Israeli-held Golan Heights.

He also said Israel views "with utmost gravity" Iranian attempts to gain a foothold in Syria or to provide advanced weapons to Hezbollah, its Lebanese proxy.

Errant fire from the Syria, which is fighting a six-year-long war, has occasionally been spilling over to Israel, usually causing no casualties or damage.

Israeli forces fired on Syrian government positions after projectiles from the war-torn country hit the occupied Golan Heights on Sunday, the army said, in the second such exchange in two days.

"The Saturday strike of the Israeli air force aircraft in the Golan Heights area was in fact carried out against the armored vehicles of the Jabhat al-Nusra militants".

Intense fighting has rocked the Quneitra province of Syria, adjacent to the Golan Heights, since rebels there launched an attack on Saturday. According to Al Mayadeen channel citing a source, at least two Syrian soldiers were killed in the airstrike.

The black and white IDF video shows one strike targeting a heavy machine gun and two strikes against two separate Syrian military tanks taking their positions.

Western-funded NGO the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebel groups of Quneitra had launched an assault and were storming army positions near Baath City.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strike was in accordance with Israel's policy. A US-led coalition backs some of the militia groups that want to overthrow Assad, including SDF and Free Syrian Army. "We will respond strongly to any attack on our territory or our citizens".

The IDF described the projectile fire as "errant", blaming it on internal fighting.
