"Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough had stern advice to the Democrats who protested on Wednesday after Republican challenger Karen Handel beat Jon Ossoff in Georgia's special congressional election on Tuesday night: "Marching in the streets does not win elections".

Trump Jr. tweeted: "Karen Handel becomes 1st Woman Rep GA has sent to Congress". Spending enough money to scald a wet mule (to borrow a phrase from Haley Barbour) to hold on to a district that Tom Price (Trump's HHS secretary) and Newt Gingrich held is not a sign of Republican health. The sleeper South Carolina Fifth District race to occupy the seat vacated by Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney, on the other hand, saw just a 3.2-point gap between Republican Ralph Norman and Democrat Archie Parnell.

[F] or Democrats, having failed to unseat a Republican in four special House elections in a row despite an extremely energized base, it's now a time for soul-searching - and finger-pointing.

CNN's Chris Cuomo offered Democrats a lesson about failure Wednesday, one day after the party lost a special election in Georgia. For all the controversy Trump has generated, this year's special elections occurred with the backdrop of a solid economy at home and relative calm overseas.

The race for Georgia's 6th district was the most expensive House race in USA history.

Democrats did hold on to a seat in California earlier this month. "Still waiting for the glass ceiling stories, or do conservatives not get them?" The minority party often picks up seats in midterm elections, and some Democrats predict the party may see a landslide election in 2018, similar to their 2006 midterm success.

On Tuesday, Republican Karen Handel defeated Jon Ossoff, a Democrat, in the race for Georgia's 6th Congressional District seat.

All the strategies that the Democrats tried during the election did not help them and none of it worked.

But while Republicans were facing a sobering reminder of their president's poor approval ratings, Handel steadied the ship in a district that only narrowly backed Trump in last November's vote.

"[Ossoff] Race better be a wake up call for Democrats - business as usual isn't working", Democrat Rep. Seth Moulton of MA tweeted out. Just over 543,351 Democrats voted, while 366,274 Republicans voted.

Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell has said this week that the Senate plan would be "different" than the House plan, which has been criticised by Democrats as providing tax cuts for the rich and cutting essential medical programmes. "This was not a referendum on Donald Trump as we would have liked for it to be", she said.
