"I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility", Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital Center said at a news conference Friday afternoon.

Scalise and three other people were shot early Wednesday at a park in suburban Washington as they practiced for a congressional charity baseball game.

Scalise, 51, suffered a rifle wound in his left hip that shattered bones, tore organs and caused severe bleeding.

Sava said on Friday there were hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".

Scalise has received two surgeries for his injuries since Wednesday, including a surgery on Thursday in orthopedic trauma to fix a broken bone in his leg. Sava said Scalise remains in the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition.

More on this as it develops. "It was never off my mind when I ran out there. the reason I was going to second base was Steve Scalise, my colleague, was fighting for his life in the hospital right now". Hospital staff told CBN News he will likely undergo more surgeries.
