High-profile supporters of Donald Trump are turning on the man investigating Russian interference in the U.S. election and possible collusion with the president's campaign - with one suggesting Mr Trump was considering "terminating" him.

"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel", Ruddy told Woodruff on the broadcast.

Press secretary Sean Spicer told NPR's Tamara Keith, "Mr". "With respect to this subject, only the president or his attorneys are authorized to comment".

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said: "Chris speaks for himself". Though Ruddy was at the White House earlier in the day, those aides said he did not meet with Trump, but White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon, a former conservative media leader himself.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment on Ruddy's remarks.

After Comey's testimony, Trump said he had been vindicated because his former FBI director confirmed telling Trump on three occasions that he was not under investigation.

Trump, who has called the appointment of Mueller "a witch hunt", has yet to publicly attack the credibility of the special counsel.

Ruddy said the president was weighing whether to dismiss Mueller because of concerns about conflicts of interest.

The White House has categorically denied rumors that Robert Mueller's head is on the chopping block.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich spoke critically of special counsel Robert Mueller and his team, calling special counsels "very unsafe". "I think it'd be a disaster".

If Trump were to fire Mueller, after firing Comey, the Russian Federation investigation would continue in various forms nonetheless, as both the House and Senate Intelligence Committees are conducting their own ongoing investigations and the FBI investigation continues as well, though if Mueller were fired, he would no longer oversee that branch of the probe.

Two senators say they are disappointed that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has sent his deputy to testify before a committee hearing on the Justice Department's budget. "I know I was sacked because of something about the way I was conducting the Russian Federation investigation was in some way putting pressure on him, in some way irritating him, and he made a decision to fire me because of that".

"Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair", Gingrich tweeted. Look who he is hiring.check fec reports.

Just weeks ago, Gingrich had heaped praise on Mueller, hailing him as a "superb choice" for special counsel whose reputation was "impeccable for honesty and integrity".

Mr Ruddy has also accused Mr Mueller of a conflict of interest, revealing the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director was a candidate to replace Mr Comey and was interviewed by Mr Trump only days before he was appointed as special independent counsel. She asked whether he has seen "any evidence of good cause" to fire Mueller.

Mr Trump's friend Chris Ruddy, CEO of Newsmax, went even further, suggesting the president was already thinking about "terminating" Mr Mueller.
