Pence on Thursday traveled to Miami for a conference covering issues affecting Central America.

Pence's communications director Jarrod Agen said in a statement: "I can confirm that the vice president has retained Richard Cullen of McGuire Woods to assist him in responding to inquiries by the special counsel".

The White House says Pence will travel from August 13 to August 17.

US Vice President Mike Pence has hired a personal lawyer to deal with requests from the special counsel investigating possible collusion with Russian Federation during the 2016 election, a top aide has said. Cullen also previously served as Virginia's Attorney General in the late 1990s. They declined to say what had sparked Pence's decision to hire an outside lawyer and referred all questions concerning the Russian Federation investigation to Cullen's office.

Cullen also served as the attorney general of Virginia and as a US attorney under President George H.W. Bush. Paul Trible, a member of the Senate committee that investigated the Iran-Contra scandal, and his work for Rep. M. Caldwell Butler, a key Republican vote on the House Judiciary Committee who voted in favor of impeaching Richard Nixon during Watergate.

Pence's visit comes the morning after President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump made a similar trip to MedStar Hospital. The law firm referred questions back to the vice president's office. He lashed out on Twitter Thursday, writing, "You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"
