Biden spoke to the donors during the E2 Summit hosted by Mitt Romney in Deer Valley, Utah, Politico reported. "By the way, you should run for Senate", he added.

One person who attended the meeting said it was a quick, off-hand comment, but Romney supporters broke into applause.

Following Donald Trump's election victory last November, former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was briefly considered by Trump's team for the position of secretary of state. Romney, who is widely liked in Utah is yet to rule out the possibility of running for the seat, having met with Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell earlier this year.

As to Biden's political aspirations, his shots at Hillary and creation of a political action committee suggest he may be gearing up for a 2020 presidential run.

Romney says he called "virtually all the former secretaries of state" including Clinton and all of them including Clinton told him to take the job. Romney has not denied any intention to run. Orrin Hatch, 83, must decide whether he wants to seek an eighth term. Romney left MA in 2015 and moved to Utah.
