In his public testimony, Comey did not disclose any links between Trump advisers and alleged Russian attempts to meddle in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, an issue that has distracted from White House policy goals such as overhauling the United States healthcare system and cutting taxes.

During a joint press conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis in the Rose Garden on Friday, President Donald Trump flatly denied former FBI Director James Comey's bombshell testimony in an open hearing on Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

"Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication.and WOW, Comey is a leaker!", Trump posted. Comey said he believes he was sacked for refusing to shut down the FBI investigation into possible Trump campaign collusion with the Russians during the 2016 presidential race.

On Comey coming out and boldly saying President Trump lied about him and the FBI, Durbin said "if the evidence was not so obvious, I would be shocked".

In a 30 March phone call, Comey recalls Trump telling him "if there were some "satellite" associates of his who did something wrong, it would be good to find that out, but that he hadn't done anything wrong, and hoped I would find a way to get it out that we weren't investigating him".

He said the president had pressured him to drop a probe into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, whom Mr Trump fired for misleading the White House over M Flynn's contacts with Moscow's ambassador. I hope there are tapes" tore through the Internet, with the inevitable T-shirts following, and Comey then dared Trump to release the tapes: "The President surely knows if there are tapes. I'm not going to say "I want you to pledge allegiance".

But Comey's testimony about the President has darkened clouds hanging over the White House.

Legal experts questioned whether Mr Trump's private encounters with Mr Comey could be considered privileged.

Oh. So, according to the president - who seemed to be glancing down at some notes while speaking - we should believe the parts of Comey's testimony that Trump liked, but we should believe the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director perjured himself on the parts that Trump didn't like.

Alan Dershowitz spoke with Brian Kilmeade about yesterday's testimony by former FBI Director James Comey and how the media is blacking out the single most important part of the testimony.

Trump: Well, I didn't say that.

When asked to comment on Trump's excuse for firing him, Comey said: "Those were lies, plain and simple".

Shortly after the press conference, leaders of the House Intelligence Committee said they had asked the White House whether there were any such tapes. "Mr. Comey has now admitted that he is one of these leakers".

Special counsel Mueller now has a separate case open into whether Trump obstructed justice by impeding an ongoing FBI investigation into Flynn.
