Church bus crashes in Atlanta area; several injured

Authorities say a church bus carrying dozens of people has crashed near Atlanta, killing one person and injuring several others. One of the buses with the student ministry mission had an accident on the way to the Atlanta airport.

The identities of the dead and injured are yet to be released.

Images from television news helicopters showed the charter bus completely overturned, with portions of it crushed and resting next to a dark-colored sedan.

Police are looking into the cause of the incident.

Frank Rucker, Finance Administrator at the church, said they are still assessing the situation, according to CBS affiliate WHNT-TV. Most of the 15 patients at WellStar Atlanta Medical Center South in East Point have been reunited with their families, officials said. "Several serious injuries. Please pray for those injured and parents as they travel to Atlanta".

Madison County Commissioner Phil Vandiver's wife and son were on the bus.

"We know there was a wreck, some injuries. Couldn't get much information, but him and his mama were fine", Vandiver said. At least two injuries were serious. "At that time he was sort of out of it-he was dazed a little, just trying to figure out what was going on".

Two people injured in the crash were airlifted to hospitals.

The church members were on their way to Botswana, where they were going to do mission work helping with a Vacation Bible School. Mount Zion Baptist Church in Huntsville, Ala., posted on its Facebook page that one of its buses with its student ministry mission was involved in a crash while traveling to the airport.

"I just heard about it (before Thursday night's council meeting)", Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said. We hold all of those families in our hearts.
