Phil Mickelson will not make the trip to Erin Hills for this year's U.S. Open, withdrawing early from the event with plans to attend his daughter's high school graduation instead.

Mickelson will watch his daughter graduate from Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad, California, on June 15 and turn 47 one day later.

The US Open is the only major championship he has not won, but he told the newspaper: "As I look back on life, this is a moment I'll always cherish and be glad I was present". "There's no greater joy as a parent".

Six times a runner-up at the U.S. Open, most recently in 2013, the tournament represents all that's standing in Mickelson's way of a majors Grand Slam. The oldest US Open champion is Hale Irwin, who was 15 days past his 45th birthday when he won in 1990.

Mickelson said only a major weather delay or unforeseen circumstance with the graduation ceremony will see him in the field.

Mickelson has not missed the U.S. Open since his first full season as a pro in 1993. He has three Masters wins plus one Open Championship and a PGA Championship on his resume. "It doesn't look good for me playing, but I'm really excited by this moment in my family's life".

In 2013, when Amanda graduated from middle school, Mickelson flew home from Philadelphia for the event, and then flew back and arrived at Merion Golf Club in Haverford, Pa., about two hours before his first-round tee time.

Amanda, who will attend Brown University in the fall, is the class president and commencement speaker.

Mickelson had considered delaying his decision until closer to the tournament's opening, but opted to give the USGA more time to select an alternate to take his place.
