Slain Broadwater deputy was father of three; one suspect hospitalized, one jailed

A sheriff's deputy was killed early Tuesday in a shootout that prompted a middle-of-the-night pursuit that spanned more than 100 miles (161 kilometers) across southwestern Montana, involving several law enforcement agencies.

"The men and women of the Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement Department extend our sincerest condolences to Sheriff Meehan, the Broadwater County Sheriff's Department, and the family of the fallen deputy".

Gallatin County and Montana Highway Patrol officers responded and found the deputy dead by the side of the road near Three Forks, Gootkin told the Bozeman Daily Chronicle.

The deputy's patrol auto was found in a ditch and its dashboard camera video was used to identify the vehicle being pursued.

The suspect vehicle was spotted near Anaconda. Butte-Silver Bow officers continued to pursue the SUV westbound on I-90 through Deer Lodge County and Powell County and into Granite County. The SUV was driving on rims alone when it came to a stop east of Missoula.

The suspects have been identified as father and son; 38-year-old Marshall Barrus of Gallatin County and 62-year-old Lloyd Barrus are both in custody in Missoula County. The driver of the SUV has been arrested and a passenger was shot by law enforcement and taken to the hospital.

The suspects took off from the scene then later were pursued by other law enforcement officers. He is being held on a felony deliberate homicide charge in the Missoula County jail.

In Butte-Silver Bow, the suspects allegedly sped through the area at more than 100 miles per hour and damaged police cars.

Lester said at least one of the suspects fired at pursuing officers with at least one semi-automatic rifle.

The suspects came out of their vehicle and started shooting at officers.
