Botha was a well-known big game hunter and houndsman who would often accompany Americans during trophy hunts in South Africa.

Botha's group spooked the herd and three elephant cows immediately charged at them - prompting Botha to open fire on the animals, according to South Africa's News24.

News 24 reported that Botha was crushed after one of the members of the group shot an elephant after she lifted Botha with her trunk. He claims to have pioneered a European-style of hunting in the region using hounds to help flush out the prey. On Friday afternoon, the group stumbled into a group of breeding elephants, which then charged at the group. One of his fellow hunters then fired a shot.

He said the body was taken to Hwange Colliery Hospital mortuary and his next of kin have since been informed.
