Goa bridge collapse: Divers resume search operation

The bridge, dating back to the Portuguese era, has been closed to traffic since the last 4 years.

A report in India.com said that a boy had attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the river and when rescue fire and emergency services tried to rescue the boy, around 50 people had gathered to witness it.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said he spoke to Parrikar following the bridge collapse reports.

The navy, which is carrying out the search and rescue operation tweeted later saying, "9 navy divers with Geminis boats and associated equipment have rushed to Curchorem, south Goa bridge collapse site for search and rescue operations".

Search operations:The divers from Indian Navy and a private agency which mans Goa's beaches have been pressed into action to search for those missing.

The search operation, which had ended early morning at 3 am on Friday, recommenced at 07:30 am but till late Friday evening no more bodies were retrieved from the river.

The rescue operation is expected to continue through the night. Soon, almost 40 persons gathered on the dilapidated bridge to witness efforts being made to rescue a struggling Wandal from the river, which led to a part of the bridge to collapse under the crfowd's weight, triggering a melee.

"The government will also carry out a safety audit of bridges and those which are found unsafe and not used by commuters, would be dismantled", Sardesai said. The others are still missing. "But on Thursday, nearly 100 jumped over from the old bridge to this footbridge They invited the calamity", he said.
