The controversy erupted as Israel's right-wing government becomes increasingly nervous about Trump's inexperience and unique personality, his new peace push and his backing away from a campaign pledge to move the US embassy to Jerusalem.

"Well, the president, I think rightly, has taken a very deliberative approach to understanding the issue itself, listening to input from all interested parties in the region, and understanding, in the context of a peace initiative, what impact would such a move have", Tillerson said concerning the embassy dilemma on "Meet The Press" Sunday.

An independent state is not only the aspiration of the vast majority of Palestinians but has been the objective of successive US administrations and the worldwide community.

The report led Netanyahu to issue an angry rebuttal.

Palestinian and other Arab leaders have warned the Trump administration that moving the United States embassy to Jerusalem would risk stirring popular anger and possible unrest, as the Palestinians view the city's eastern half as their capital and because of the city's significance to Muslims.

The rival claims to Jerusalem lie at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and no countries now have their embassies there, instead basing them in Israel's commercial capital Tel Aviv.

The Israeli prime minister's office says it is seeking clarifications from President Donald Trump after an American official said the Western Wall is part of the West Bank.

Besides his one-day stay in Israel, President Trump will also visit Saudi Arabia for his first overseas visit since his inauguration in January.

Separately, Israeli officials reacted angrily to reports in local media that representatives of the USA consulate had suggested the Western Wall in east Jerusalem did not belong to Israel. "It makes many of us - who are hoping for a change in U.S. -Israel relations - nervous", Foxman, the current Director of Center for the Study of Anti-Semitism at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, told Jewish Insider "I can not believe that the traditionally pro-Palestinian functionaries in the American Consulate in Jerusalem are making the decisions on the Kotel and Jerusalem".

"The statement that the Western Wall is part of the West Bank was received with shock", an official in Netanyahu's office said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Trump promised during his presidential campaign to move the United States embassy to Jerusalem and recognize the city as Israel's capital and remarked on the pledge in an interview the day before his inauguration, saying: "You know, I'm not a person who breaks promises".

Trump is reportedly planning to visit the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City.

Rivlin called on the "whole world to recognise Jerusalem as the official capital of the state of Israel".

The premier's office was referring to a tweet posted earlier in the day by Fox News foreign correspondent Connor Powell, who wrote on Twitter that "everyone I've spoken to in DC that has been briefed on #Jerusalem embassy move says #Netanyahu told #Trump not to move embassy at this time".

He also surrounded himself with a core of advisers with strong ties to the West Bank settlement movement, including his ambassador, David Friedman.

"We look forward to receiving President Trump and we want to work with you and with the president these coming years to strengthen our great alliance".

Friedman arrived Monday and immediately visited the Western Wall, praying there and kissing the sacred site.
