Half-billion Windows 10 devices, but PC slump stunts growth

Nadella spent time on stage at the Seattle conference stressing a need to build trust in technology, saying new applications must avoid dystopian futures feared by some.

Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella said on Wednesday tech developers have a responsibility to prevent a dystopian "1984" future as the United States technology titan unveiled a fresh initiative to bring artificial intelligence into the mainstream.

"What Orwell prophesied in '1984, ' where technology was being used to monitor, control, dictate, or what Huxley imagined we may do just by distracting ourselves without any meaning or objective", Nadella said. "The user experience itself is going to span all of your devices".

And it's all about evolution.

Just over three years later, the technology landscape has changed and the new motto is created to reflect that.

Microsoft executives used demonstrations to provide a glimpse into a near future in which artificial intelligence hosted online works with internet linked devices such as construction site cameras to alert workers of dangers, available tools, or unauthorized activities.

We have seen hints of how this would work in practice in the last few weeks, such as the integration of LinkedIn Sales Navigator with Dynamics 365. At the time, Microsoft quipped that developers will be able to bring their Chromium-based browsers to the operating system, hinting that Chrome and Firefox will be available to download at some point. However, Microsoft's solution takes that a step further by building a timeline of your copy content.

It sounds weird, but it makes flawless sense.

The added bells and whistles will roll out later this year as part of "Fall Creators Update" that will be provided for free to 500 million personal computers, smartphones and tablets powered by Windows 10.

Microsoft's Azure Cloud plays a key role in this new world. Project Rome also enables remote controls.

So, discussions during the Build 2017 main keynote primarily ranged from Microsoft's artificial intelligence efforts to talk about its growing Windows 10 user base.
