North Korea could launch sarin nerve gas says Japan

The move was seen as a possible quid pro quo, suggesting it might make Beijing more inclined to help resolve the escalating row with North Korea.

The dollar index, which tracks the US unit against a basket of six rival currencies, steadied at 100.560, flat on the day but down 0.6 percent for the week. As North Korea's only ally in the world, China has a large influence on North Korean actions.

Earlier, South Korea warned North Korea against engaging in any "provocation", such as a nuclear or missile test, to mark the "Day of the Sun", the 105th anniversary of the birth of North Korea's state founder Kim Il Sung, which the country will celebrate on Saturday.

"The spokesperson for North Korea's Institute for Disarmament and Peace issued a statement condemning the [United States] for launching military attacks on a sovereign state while 'crying out for peace by strength'".

This comes as a US carrier is steaming towards the peninsula.

Satellite imagery showed activity at North Korea's Punggye-ri testing site, a sign the secretive regime could be preparing for another nuclear test, analysts from the USA research institute 38 North wrote.

Meanwhile, a Washington-based think tank 38 North, that monitors North Korea, said satellite images taken on Wednesday showed continued activity around the Punggye-ri nuclear test site on the east coast, Efe news reported.

In the currency market, the won fell 0.8 percent.

The won was quoted at 1,140.0 to the USA dollar at the conclusion of onshore trade, down 0.9 per cent from the previous session.

OIL: On Friday, the New York Mercantile Exchange and the London Metal Exchange were closed for a holiday. Brent crude, used to price global oils, added 3 cents to close at $55.89 per barrel in London.

The Japanese yen was little changed at 109.12 yen per dollar, off its five-month high of 108.73 to the dollar touched on Thursday. The euro rose slightly to $1.0626 from $1.0616.
