Pai, a commissioner in the USA communications regulatory agency, met then President-elect Trump amid speculation that he could head the body that deals with cellphone spectrum and broadcasting.

Pai, who is 44, met Trump earlier this week, though Trump's transition team has given no details of the conversation.

POLITICO is reporting that the TRUMP administration will make the rumors official and name Commissioner AJIT PAI to be the next Chairman of the FCC.

He believes in competition, and says that "the FCC should do everything it can to ensure that its rules reflect the realities of the current marketplace and basic principles of economics". Among his notable dissents has been on the 2015 Open Internet order ("net neutrality") - pointing to a possible reversal of the regulations that were opposed by major telecom players including AT&T (NYSE:T) and Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA). According to agency rules, he will need to be reconfirmed at the end of the year.

Mr. Pai, 44, a lawyer and former Senate aide, has been a frequent critic of new telecommunications rules pushed by departing Democratic chairman Tom Wheeler.

Conditions in the principality have been icy in recent days, with frost and black ice covering the roads in sub-zero temperatures. In a statement on Saturday Paddon urged that people not speculate about the accident and called for privacy and respect.

A request for comment sent to Pai's FCC address was not immediately returned.

However, Morken's position is not widely held among those working with Trump on the FCC - so the chances of another anti-net neutrality appointee are fairly high. "He's never met a mega-merger he didn't like or a public safeguard he didn't try to undermine".

"Pai has been an effective obstructionist who looks out for the corporate interests he used to represent in the private sector", Free Press president and CEO Craig Aaron said in a statement.

Initially, Pai will lead an FCC with a 2-to-1 Republican majority, after two Democrats departed during the change of presidential administrations.

The commission is now divided 2-1 in favor of Republicans, with Mignon Cleburne as the lone Democrat.
